Web Developer Fundamentals

The Basics —

• A 16-week course with lectures, labs and team learning

• Explore HTML, CSS, and JavaScript – the core building blocks of the web

• Build a website to showcase in your portfolio

The Blueprint:

HTML is the core technology markup language of the Internet and is used for structuring and presenting content for the Web. This course will focus on the areas of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and explore the core building blocks of websites through learning the fundamentals of Web development.

On successful completion of this course, students will achieve:

  • Strong fundamental knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
  • Good knowledge of Cascading Stylesheet (CSS3)
  • Foundational knowledge of JavaScript

The Structure:

Our Web Developer Fundamentals course is divided into three sections, each area focusing on a different goal.

Section 1: HTML.

We will start with how to set up web pages. During this part of class, we work with HTML markup tags including text, lists, links, images, tables, forms, video, and other elements. This is the starting point for any successful website launch

Section 2: CSS

We will focus on beautifying the web pages through CSS, starting with an explanation of how CSS allows styling and layout of web pages. We will learn how to control things like color of text, size of fonts, background colors, and images, as well as how to control where elements are positioned on the screen. These are the same techniques that professional web developers use to make websites attractive and pleasing

Section 3: JavaScript

We will learn how to use JavaScript to make websites more engaging, interactive, and usable. Here we address the concept of Document Object Model (DOM) and how DOM lets the programmer access and change webpage contents while it is loaded into the browser. We will go on to see how events can be used to trigger code and later introduce jQuery to see how it can make the process of writing scripts faster and easier.

The Presentation:

This course will be very hands-on and will require the student to perform various programming activities. Students will build a website for a non-profit as part of this course. At the culmination of part 3, they would have built a fully functioning website.

Planning:

This course is meant for anyone who wants to learn how to build websites from scratch. It starts from the basic concepts, so prior programming or markup experience is not assumed. However, an aptitude for programming will go a long way in being successful in this course. A laptop computer is required for this course. Every class will have hands-on activities.

The course does not assume any prior knowledge of programming. Motivation, curiosity, and enthusiasm for computer programming is required. The course will take the student from the very basics to intermediate/advanced concepts of the HTML, and CSS. We will then progress to learning how to code responsive web pages that resize themselves automatically based on the size of the user’s screen. Finally, we will get a detailed introduction to powerful language of web interactivity: JavaScript. Using JavaScript, you will be able to add interactivity to web pages that you designed and developed using HTML and CSS.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL I BE REQUIRED TO COMMIT TO THE PROGRAM?

YES Training is an intense, fast-paced program that will entail a lot of hard work and dedication in order to be successful.  Classes meet for a total of 6 hours per week.  While there will be an opportunity to work on assignments and projects in class, it may be necessary to put in additional time outside of class in order to complete any required work.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE CODING?

Experience is not necessary.  Our courses are designed to teach you the information necessary to transform you into a well-versed Web Developer. However, it is pertinent to come to class motivated with a desire to learn.

HOW DOES YOUR APPLICATION PROCESS WORK?

Simply fill out the online application and a representative will contact you to schedule an interview.  During the interview, you will be asked some questions followed by a short programming aptitude test. The approximate time for both the interview and test should be about 1 hour.  Our intent is to determine whether you have the necessary motivation to learn an entirely new set of skills and can thrive in our fast-paced learning environment.

HOW MUCH IS THE TUITION FOR THE PROGRAM?

The tuition for this program is covered by federal grants. You will graduate from this program with no debt. There are residency requirements to be eligible for this scholarship. If you are a resident of Jackson, Clay, Platte, Ray or Cass counties in Missouri; Johnson, Wyandotte or Leavenworth counties in Kansas, you might be eligible. Apply today to learn more if you qualify for the program.

CAN YOU GIVE ME AN IDEA HOW THE CLASSROOM TIME WILL BE STRUCTURED?

Instructors have designed classroom instruction in a manner that comprises all three learning styles.  Students can expect each class to include lectures, computer sessions to learn and apply knowledge, and group discussions/participation. You will be asked to present your solutions to the class as well as provide feedback to your peers.

WILL YOU HELP ME FIND A JOB?

It is our goal to prepare our students for the workforce, and we will try to do everything we can to help them succeed.  Our programs are designed to not only give instruction but also incorporate opportunities for networking.  Throughout the duration of our programs, our students will meet with IT professionals and CIOs in the Kansas City metro area and gain insight into what employers are looking for in a prospective employee.  In addition, we will host a Demo Day for students to showcase their work to local businesses and business leaders scouting new talent.  The training skills you will acquire from our program along with the networking opportunities that we provide, should be the winning combination that lands you a job, however, your success is dependent on how much time and effort you put into the program.

WHO WILL BE TEACHING THE COURSE?

Universities and workforce centers have partnered with Yoodle, a Kansas City based branding and technology agency to design and deliver these classes. Yoodle has been in the business of providing web design and development solutions to Kansas City for over a decade. Instructors for this class are professional developers who hold IT degrees as well as a plethora of real-world development experience. They strive to provide students with more than just technical training. They help students integrate knowledge into practical applications through individual and team projects. You will have the opportunity to learn from the best and apply the skills to your own projects during the course and after.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS A CLASS?

Our program is designed to be fast-paced and intense. We want you to be successful and see you achieve your goal of learning code. Therefore, it is critical to maintain a good attendance record. If you must be absent, we will do what we can to help you catch up. However, it will require that you commit time outside of class to learn the material covered during your absence. Every absence will put you behind the class. So, it is highly encouraged that you do not miss any classes.
